Feedback request: What sources advised to check on vehicle

Am interested in cars on eBay, Autotrader and such.

Questions:

What methods/sources are recommended to check vehicles out and what should I be looking for prior to bidding?
I know about carfax.com. Are they considered good?
How about methods to get an out of state car looked at?

Has anyone purchased vehicles online? Would like to hear experiences and input.
