CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES AND THEN STAYS ON THEN OFF NEXT DRIVE 850

HAS ANYONE SEEN THERE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASH 4 OR 5 TIMES AND THEN STAY ON INSTEAD OF JUST TURNING ON? MY CAR HAS DOME THIS TWICE NOW, THE LAST TIME I PULLED CODES FOR A MISFIRE, I HAVE NOT CHECKED THE CODES FROM A FEW DAYS AGO. THE LIGHT FLASHED WHEN I HAMMERED DOWN TO PASS A CAR ON THE HI-WAY AND THEN STAYED ON. THE NEXT DAY THE LIGHT WENT OUT AND IS STILL OUT?

JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF YOUR LIGHT HAS EVER FLASHED ON AND OFF REPEATADLY BEFORE IT STAYED ON FOR A DRIVING CYCLE OR TWO?

MY MANUAL ONLY TALKS ABOUT THE LIGHT BEING ON OR OFF NO FLASHING?

    How old are the oxygen sensors? When they start to fail this happens sometimes. If you don't find a culprit code I would suspect they are in the primary phases of going bad. Mike

      Thanks for the info, the car is a 1997 GLT 2.5 Litre Turbo with over 100K miles the O2 sensors are original parts.

      My check engine light has come on and gone off the next day two times recently. since the light has gone off i have not checked the codes in the ecu. i do have a code reader.

      The car a has also had slightly decreased mileage recently so i changed the spark plugs last weekend with some new bosch double platinum's/air filter and the car runs better but still has some problems it feels like it is surging or missing sometimes on the highway when i floor it to pass another car but besides that runs OK. The exhaust has at times looked like the car is running rich so the 02 sensors may be indeed be going out.

      is it worth cleaning them, i have heard mixed reviews on this.
      are the bosch 02 sensors available at local autoparts stores for our cars or do they have to come from the dealer?

        Yeah that sounds like the early stage of O2 sensor failure. It can be other than a carbon buildup causing the sensor to flag and if you got more than a 100k out of them treat yourself to some new ones. They are about $115 apiece and you probably need two, the one in front of the converter and the one aft of the converter. I would check with www.FCPGroton.com and just order them from there online, they are major Volvo parts supply house. They are heated sensors thats why they cost so much. Good luck ........
