My previous post did not include that the door opens from the outside when it is locked. I know it's supposed to open from the inside regardless, but not the outside!!

The lock mechanism is broken internally. This mechanism is serviced as a unit. There are no individual internal parts available. If you are in the US/Canada and still under warranty, it should be covered. The repair involves removing the door panel and replacing the lock assembly. I think the part runs around $150-160, and around 1-1.5 hours labor.
