Hard wiring a Valentine One Radar Detector 850 1993

Hi all,

I just purchased a 1993 850 GLT. Has anyone had experience installing the hard wire kit for the Valentine One in this car. If so advice and pictures would be greatly appreciated. The cigarette lighter is intermittent for power, and I would prefer a hard wired solution.

Thanks in advance.

I wired mine to the interior light above the rear view mirror. The detector is best mounted up high as well.

Aux hard wire plug 850 1993

My 98 has an auxillary hard wire plug under the dash tucked away by the steering column. My manual talks about it I think (it's in French), I can only make out the picture, but my Bell 950 turns on and off with the key.

I'm unfamiliar with the plug arrrangements for the '93 850, but I can tell you about my '98 V70.

I use the cigarette lighter socket in the console to plug in the power plug/remote display unit, have a wire running into the base of the manual shift boot, through the console, under the glovebox, behind the "A" pillar trim and up into the Valentine-1 which resides on the passenger visor in the pocket of a "Visor Organizer" ($7, Target Stores) with a window cut out for the laser receiver. It's invisible from outside the car, and pretty much inside the car too, except to the driver.

In the event I need to turn off the unit - if I need to discuss my speed with a man or woman in blue standing beside the car, or if wife.gov is squawking about the V-1's squawking - I need just pull up on the remote display unit and that disconnects it.

Simple ... effective. The V-1 is worth it's weight in speeding tickets.

My cell phone is plugged into the rear outlet in the console, and that's it for lighter plugs ... fortunately, I don't smoke!

The lighter is a great place. It only works when the car is running and why woudl you need radar when stopped? There is always power to the lighter. That's why you have to push it in to make contact to charge the lighter.

Unfortunately there is only one lighter in this car unless I'm mistaken. I would prefer to have it for my cell phone. I plan on using this car for long trips with my family.

I really don't want a plethora of plugs (ie lighter socket splitter) and wires. On my S4 (had to sell) I powered the V1 off the fuse box (in the cabin) and ran the wires inside the pillar to the window shade. No dangling wires, nice neat install. I also have to park in some questionable areas at times, and would prefer to just have the lighter in the socket, so as not to tempt anyone.

If someone could tell me which wires to tap into for power that would be great.

For wife's Honda, I have a tap (the blue 3M one that comes with the V-1) into the overhead light console, for the '86 Porsche I have the tap put in at the light for the ashtray. On the Porsche the main V-1 unit also resides in the pocket of a visor organizer. I have the remote display Velcroed into the console pocket. I don't use the remote display on the Honda.

Since the '93 850s differ significantly from even the later 850s, what works on the wiring for an 1997 850 might not work on yours. Later 850s and SVC70s have one lighter socket at the front of the console and a second facing the rear seat for the rear seat passengers. Or for cell phones in the US. This is a Belgian car, remember, they can't ignore smokers!

I'd suggest doing what I did on the Honda and the Porsche. Find a "likely candidate" such as the hot wire to the cigarette lighter, test it with your multimeter's probes to see if that it gets juice when the ignition is "on" but not when it's "off", and if it "works" use it.
