ignition problem V70-XC70 1998

I pulled into my driveway this evening and turned off my V70 AWD wagon. A few minutes later I tried starting it and discovered that the key would not turn beyond the first position. I've checked the fuses, kicked the tires and cussed for a few minutes. But nothing is working. Any thoughts?

Just a couple of days, someone on the list had the same problem I guess. One of the things offered to him/her was to check if the steering wheel was locked at the outer extremum. I think you would have to try moving the steering wheel a bit while turning the ignition to crank the car.

Sorry to inform you Nancy, but you just fell victim to the "chronic" bad ignition switch. You'll have to go to the dealership to get a new ignition switch.I don't think there is a 98 Volvo out there that has'nt needed one replaced.Good luck.

Not another every 98 V70 problem... I haven't had this one yet.

Have had:
Door lock
Bevel Gear
Driveshaft bearings
Air Mass Sensor (Car won't drive at all when this goes and mine went 1200 miles from home in downtown Boston!)
Turbo gasket
Tailgate panel
Leaky washer fluid tees
Faulty signal harness
Leaky fuel filler
Loose gas cap causing check engine

Anything else I have to look forward to?

future problems V70-XC70 1998

add:

Power window master switch assembly $135.
AirConditioner condensor gizmo in heaterbox $400+
Top rear and lower right motor mounts (IPD for top- Lower one is volvo $110)

if you keep replacing major components every few thousand miles, it will last 300k. If only the bank account holds up.
