running the engine cold: what could THAT do? 850 1995

what bad things can happen from running an engine cold (about 1/3 of normal opting temp on the dash gauge, with noticeable drivetrain roughness and sluggishness)in subzero emps for about 3 months/ 3000 miles? A thermostat replacement last week made a world of performance difference (forgot that the car ever ran this well) and revealed just how long the frog sat in the slowly boiling pot of water...

it could have shortened the engine life by ~ 3k miles.....................most engine wear occurs below 120 f and above 250 f
