ATF FLUSH + ATF FILTER CHANGE 850 1994

I have found information about ATF flush but, where can I get information about how to change the tranny filter.

My mechanic says that it is strongly recommended to change the aut. transmission filter when ATF flush is carried out.

Is there any site to consult price and characteristics of that part?

Thanks in advance.

ATF FLUSH + ATF FILTER CHANGE 850

Went to my neigborhood garage where they use BAY13 method & SAME equipment. Cost $120, and well worth my not having to mess with it.

Had this done to balky 245 Borg WArner Transmission, and it was like getting a new one?

The 850 has no serviceable filter. The guy telling you that is use to domestic cars. Now, if you're ever unfortunate enough to buy an S80 with its GM trans, THAT trans has a filter.
There is a screen bolted to the 850 trans valve body (like 200s/700s/900s) but it's got no service interval and never needs cleaning, doesn't clog up normally. If there was enough debris in the trans to clog that, your trans would be toast long before that ever occured.
Just do a trans flush the Bay13 method, even easier if one uses the top cooler line instead but that doesn't flush the cooler.

NO filter S80 2000

Earl,

Extract from your post; ..... S80 with its GM trans, THAT trans has a filter.

Does the S80 have a real filter or a screen? What's your source for this info? It's important to me. Thanx, Larry P.

S80 trans with filter S80 2000

On the S80, it's an actual GM filter (not a screen). My dealer also sells GM cars and I could get a GM filter from the GM parts counter that's identical if our parts guys didn't stock the same part in a box that says "Volvo" on it.
It's seemingly strange that there's no filter or fluid change interval on S80 trannies but the fluid seems to stay red and clean looking far longer than on other FWD/AWD Volvo trannies.
If I owned an S80, I'd probably replace the filter (with pan gasket) and do a fluid flush every 50K miles but that's just my opinion.

Is your mechanic a Volvo specialist? Doesn't sound like it. n/m 850 1994

I understand there is a "filter" or perhaps better named "wire screen" that should need be cleaned.

Since there is not excessive mention to this item I deduct it is not a critical part and is more important the ATF flush than the ATF filter renew, perhaps the mechanic only want to raise the bill.

Neverthless, I would like to know about somebody that could tell me if this filter usually shows clogged or more or less clean after several years. If so I will not mess in cleaning/change (+ pan gaskets) the filter and I will limit myself to change (and pay) the ATF.

As far as I can remember from this board that there is no filter within the tranny. Just flush the ATF with synthetic ATF and you should be fine.

There isn't a filter than you can get to. There may be one inside the tranny, but I don't think so...

Go to
VolvoSpeed, Bay13 and you will find the actual Volvo flush method. There is no mention of replacing the filter. Just flushed mine last month and didn't mess with a filter. Since I sell gaskets for a living, I'd expect you need to drop the pan to get to the filter. Volvo trans pan gaskets are molded rubber designs so plan on paying a bit. Not too many aftermarket gaskets like this out there becuase those guys can't afford the gasket tooling. Stick with the O.E. gasket in this case.

good luck
