Removal of 'check engine' light C70 1999

Hi,

My car needs a smog check, but the "check engine" light is on. The smog technician told me that I needed to remove the light before doing the actual test.

I was wondering if there are any OBDII devices that would enable me to remove the "check engine" light. I'm looking for the cheapest one out there.

Also, if anyone who has the device is located around Los Angeles...I would pay to have the light removed. Thanks!

Tommy

    Hi,

I just bought the Equus 3100 and it does remove the check engine codes. Actually I had two codes in there and both of them was removed. Now, i just need to find out what the problem is and repair them. Thanks for everyone's support.

    Tommy

    Thanks to everyone that responded!!

I'm going stop by Kragen this weekend and pick up an Equus 3100 OBD2 reader. From their website, they state that they can delete P(0) and P(1) codes. Also, the unit that IPD is selling is the same one. I have already had the code read by Autozone for free, but their unit does not clear check engine lights for P(1) codes.

I'll let you guys know how it goes. Hopefully, I will be able to pass the smog test after this, plus I'll have a new toy to play with.

It takes about 15 minutes, but you could remove the top fascia (11 torx screws hold it in), then pull out the instrument cluster and remove the light behind the "check engine" segment. Just move the fascia out of the way enough to get the instrument cluster out; if you disconnect the passenger airbag to remove the fascia completely, you'll have ANOTHER light to reset.

That won't solve the problem however. Even if the bulb is removed, the code(s) still exist in the control unit, still read by a scan tool and the car will still fail the emisions test.

A scan tool may not do it as the correct method for a '99 on up Volvo is to have the code(s) checked, cleared through Volvos dealer PC known as Vadis. Disconnecting the battery won't work.
I wouldn't advise buying a generic scan tool for your '99 car if it doesn't do the trick as you'ld be wasting money.
The correct way is to have your dealer read, clear codes, like it or not.
You can't "remove the light" as the topic implies but the codes must be cleared, problem fixed before passing any emisions tests.

That differs from my own experience with a generic scan tool, in this case the Equus unit. Reads codes, including the proprietary ones, and resets the check engine light too. Most all of the generic OBDII readers will do the same.

Have a look at this related thread, below:

    http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=587701

Pep Boys will read codes for free (and hopefully tell you
what triggered it). I assume they will also reset.

www.ipdusa.com selles an OBDII reader (they can reset, too).
Expect to pay $150 to $175 for one.

Just before getting to the test disconnect car's battery for 15 min. and the light will be gone, however it'll be back unless it is just one of the loose cap deals.
