Bought an S80 T6 on 2/1/03 - What verdict? S80 1999

Bought a beautiful white T6 fully loaded with 60,000 miles on it in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, 2/1/03, paid $16,900. Drove the car home (900 miles)to North Carolina without incident. On Monday the car started surging at idle and would not hold a constant RPM. Took car on Wednesday to independent Volvo shop. They said it would most likely need a new Electronic Throttle Body, but said they would clean the one I had because sometimes that works for awhile. They also removed some fault codes from the computer and reset some things. That was $140.00 and lasted about 30 miles. Now the car will not idle and dies when stopped in gear. If I put it in neutral it surges from 500rpm to 1100rpm, back and forth. Now looking at a new Throttle Body, or maybe a Air Mass Meter. I could send the car back to the place I bought it, either way I'm looking at about $700.00. The car really drives well otherwise. What verdict on a 1999 S80 T6, thumbs up to keep or thumbs down to return? I am going to contact the dealer that originally leased the car to see if they were also the servicing dealer, and if so what history the car has. That may aid my decision.

fix your ETM and have the dealer upload the software upgrade. Also, have a dealer run the VIN on their VEN warranty inquiry to see if it is open for any recalls. If it is open for any recalls they would still be under warranty. Better yet, give me you VIN and I'll run it for you. All I need is the last 6 digits of your vin and a way to contact you.

Thanks for offering to look up information on this car. This last 6 digits of the VIN is: 014833. Send me info at rerains1@yahoo.com

The selling dealer has said to go ahead and get car fixed, up to $350.00, at a Volvo dealership. Any more than $350.00 and he wants us to talk. My guess is that he will want to split cost over that. We'll see, I take the car to Raleigh on Monday, 2/10/03.

Tough decision. Volvos are nice cars but are plagued with problems especially the S80. If you really like the car I would suggest keeping it. BUT make sure you establish a slush fund for repairs. They are costly and can drive a common man MAD. If you want to keep that car see if the dealer will cough up some of the profit that they made on the sale and apply it to the repair costs. Just a thought.

Go ahead and get it fixed. You will be better off taking it to a Volvo dealer. I just had the same problem with my 1999 S70. It cost me $750. After it is repaired decide if you still like the car. If not sell it. You bought a used car with a used throttle body that had 60,000 mile on it. After $700 you now have a brand new throttle body that should last another 60,000 miles. You still paid much less than a new S80.

That would be good advice if the only potential problem is the throttle unit. Look at all the other modules that cost even more. They also will fail prematurely. Expecting a $600 fix any time and for several components in a car is ridiculous. Volvo is in the toilet with this and other products. I wouldn't trust even a 2001 and up or S70, S60, none of them.

Keep the car and fix the problem. It would have happened anyway. You bought a used car...obviously it's going to have a few problems here and there. Take it to a reputable dealer...the independents don't know or most don't have the computer system and knowledge to diagnose or fix this car electronically. The whole car is run by computer. Have the dealer upgrade your software too while you're there. Finally, I don't think you're going to find anything better at the price you paid, except for those boring Japanese Ricers that everyone and their grandmother has. By the way, make sure that your timing belt has been changed. This is very important, especially on a car approaching 70K Miles.

OK, from someone who is NOT a Volvo tech ... Consumer Reports says to avoid the S80s especially the '99. The S80s are seductive automobiles, and a "bargain" on the used car market (or maybe not, when you add in the hassles and the cost of keeping them running). They are pretty scary electronically. This is not something that's limited to Volvo, the BMW 745i is pretty scary electronically, too.

If you can rid yourself of it without taking a large financial hit, that's what I'd suggest.

If I were in the market for a used luxury car, I'd probably limit my search to Lexus and Infiniti. (Not any of the Eurocars, and especially not Jaguar!)

Don't waste your time and money by taking THAT car to any independant as they simply can't fix it. If it is your ETM, only a dealer can DL the needed SW in the new one as it won't run otherwise. ETMs and MAF meters are common S80 ailments and if it's the ETM, it'll have fault code(s) for "internal failure" and no cleaning will ever cure the problem.
The '99 S80s are very problematic and with higher mileage as yours, unfortunately it will drain your wallet often. All leased cars are poorly maintained by their original owners (like NO maintenance) so the cars overall longevity is questionable.
If you can get rid of it, I would and ASAP. Get a newer, non-leased S80 instead ('01 on up).
