When is it time for a tranny flush?

My mechanic says that Volvo 850's aren't made to have their tranny fluid changed. Ever. Only when it is burnt and black do they change the fluid. Is this true?

My Volvo shifts hard into 1st 2nd and reverse.
It's been like this forever but I think it's getting worse.
I hope it's not the tranny? I'm getting kinda scared!
Thank you for this website to help me get prepared.

What utter bullshit. If that's the case then why does every Volvo dealer have a tranny fluid flushing machine?!?

Great advice here: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/Transflush.htm

Yep. That's what the book says. But...

Well, yes. But by then, how much damage has been done?

A flush every 30-40k miles is probably good preventive maintenance.
