Airpump 850 1996

Iīve just found out that my airpump was filled with water and totally out of order. The relay was bad aswell. This pump costs big dollares about 400 i think
and think I donīt replace it. Itīs only there for keeping the exhausts at a lower level when the engine is cold. Is there somebody else out there who also
hasnīt replaced a bad pump.

If you don't do anything about it and the valve is stuck open (as they do when they fail) you will destroy the O2 sensor after a short time. I took off the valve (near the firewall) and made a gasket to seal the hole for the valve. Thay way no air gets into the system to burn up the O2 sensor. You WILL fail emissions if the O2 sensor is bad.

I don't quite understand how an open SAS valve could let any air in if the pump was not running. An open SAS valve lets exhaust gas to get into the pump and that's why they fail, not the other way around. And where is the oxygen sensor "burning" idea coming from? Are you suggesting that oxygen sensor exposed to excess air will get "exhausted" prematurely?

A friend of mine is a master volvo mechanic and he gave me that advice. I haven't been wrong by him yet. I don't quite understand the problem either, since the exhaust manifold is pressuized by the exhaust and forces the air out into the air pump when the pump fails. On the other hand, the air pump is providing air into the system through the valve, so it must be able to overcome the pressure of the exhaust manifold to be able to force air into the manifold during cold start conditions. My guess is that there is no "pressure" from the manifold at that point. Most of the air pumps fail due to the moisture from exhaust condensation getting into them and flooding the rotor. If the exhaust was acutally getting into the air pump with any pressure, the water would not have a chance to condense in the tubing or air pump.

If you don't have a state inspection or state emissions testing, then screw it. If you do, your car will fail inspection.

I'm not so sure about failing emission testing. If the car is warm and they just sample exhaust the car will pass the test as long as the CEL is reset just before the test. I think that ECU tries to start the pump two to three times before setting CEL but if the car is warm it will not even do that. If they scan OBD2 for emission test it may be more difficult as the car will not be "ready" as the drive cycle will not be completed. However, there was a post few weeks ago claiming that state inpection let the car pass without the drive cycle completed stating that Volvo drive cycle is somewhat finicky.

I know my car has still not cleared emissions. Praying for the rain to stop so I can Replace SAS and Air Pump. Tried the reset the CEL before test method and failed due to an unready condition. Put the car through the drive cycles and discovered a airpump problem.

Is your 'Check Engine' light on? 850 1996

If not, how will the Emissions Nazis ever know about your air pump?
