Noise in Front Passenger Side When Cold S40-V40

Looking for possible causes on this one. I have a noise eminating from the front passenger side when I accelerate from a stop. Here are the particulars:

1. It only makes this noise when the outside temp is below 38F.
2. It makes the sound when I accelerate from a stop.
3. It does not make the sound if I am stopped, put the car in neutral, then hit the accelerator.
4. It makes the sound when I stop abruptly from a standing start.
5. It does not seem to make the noise when I go in reverse from a stop.
6. It sounds like the noise is coming from a location approximately 2/3s of a distance from me to the front passenger side wheel.
6. The best I can describe the sound in typing is: eeh..earh..guh.guh.guh - From the passenger cabin.
7. From outside the car it sounds like: euh..guh.guh.guh.

These are some inclinations of mine: manifold? exhaust? something loose? tranny? Any thoughts out there? Thanks in advance.

Pete.

Noise in Front Passenger Side When Cold S40-V40

I am new to this message board. Anyway, my Volvo 2000 S40 had the same issue and I just brought it in to the dealer this morning. I had the head mechanic drive the car with me. He pinpointed the noise on the passenger side. I was later notified that it is a worn engine mount and needs to be replaced. The sounds is like a grinding type noise when you accelerate. It last only until the engine warms up. Lucky my car has one more year of warranty and under 50,000 miles on it so it was covered. If your car is still under warranty I would bring it to the dealer and insist someone drive the car with you and have them hear it themselves. Hope this helps. Best of luck too.

Ribbit -- thanks for the confirmation info. Thankfully our car is also still under warranty -- all the work performed thus far has been covered.

Did you also experience a clunk associated with the grinding noise?

I have experienced a clunking noise intermittenly during start up on cold weather days. But the grinding noise was always there during cold days. The dealer called me yesterday and told me that they have to keep the car overnight and will hopefully complete the repairs by today. I also had them repair some vibration noise on the ceiling of the driver side. We ended up pinpointed that ceiling noise to something loose on the moon roof shade. I am still worried that there will be more issues with this car after the warranty runs out.

Thanks again for the follow-up. Your symptoms sound very much like ours -- clicking/grinding, sometimes with a clunk, but only when cold, and only when accelerating from a stop.

If you can, let us know what happens when you get the car back. Curious to hear if the problem is gone (hopefully), and what parts were replaced.

We've had the front struts and a sway-bar bushing replaced, but to no avail.

They are just replacing the engine mount. The Volvo mechanic told me that if it was the strut and sway bar the noise will be more constant while steering and not accelerating. Anyway, I am going to, hopefully, pick it up around 5PM today. I will let you know what happens.

Okay, I got my car back at 5 PM today. I drove it around for about 15 minutes and the noise was gone. The write up for the repair was as follows:

"Found bad engine mount right side. When removed bolt from mount threads came out. Retapped threads and replaced mount."

I will drive it more this weekend and hopefully the sound will not reappear.

Thanks for the update. Made a new appointment with our dealer. I inquired about the engine mounts, and they claimed they checked them along with the swaybars & struts. Not sure if it's something else entirely, or if they didn't check that closely...

Noise in Front Passenger Side When Cold S40-V40 2000

I've experienced some noises under similiar circumstances. The noise is hard to describe it sounds to me like somewhere between a scraping-crunching-clicking noise from the passenger (right) side. It only happens when the car has been parked for a while -- usually overnight, and then happens for the first 10-15 minutes of driving, only when accelerating from a stop. The noise lasts for about 1/2 - 1 second and then stops. (but can re-occur if you stop & start again during the first 10 minutes).

There's also a clunk, which is more intermittent, but happens under the same conditions, front front passenger (right) side.

Dealer has replaced a swaybar bushing and front struts, to no avail.

I've read other reports that the clunk could be a worn engine mount bushing, but very little else on this scraping noise. Not sure if they're related. Clunk is always accompanied by the scraping , but the scraping often happens on its own with no clunk.

(I call it a scraping noise for lack of a better description. )

I have no idea, but I died laughing at No. 6 and 7.

Does the sound speed up as the speed increases so that you know its in the tire. If it doesn't do it when in neutral then you know its not the motor.

I once got revenge on a boss I hated by putting big dead fish in his hubcaps (old Ford PU) because he made us work July 4 without any extra pay. (we were students and did busy work while he got double time and a half)

It thumped all the time, and because I put a fish in each of the hubcaps he couldn't pinpoint the smell or noise.

Have you been mean to any employees lately?
