what are my upgrade stereo (HU-613) options??? pls help as 1 CD player is unbearable V70-XC70 2002

besides getting a standard radio frequency CD changer that will require separate controls (versus using the thumb & existing stereo controls to change Cds), what are my options besides paying the dealer lots of money to install the next system up (HU-809?, the one with the 4 CD changer) - is there a good OEM system available out there that works on Factory RF???

also, assuming answer is yes, how much should I pay and where do you ask stereo guys to install since is open hatchback? under a seat? not sure wher it would fit since can't go in the dash - any ideas you have would be much appreciated!

I may be wrong, but I think you are going to have a hard time finding a third party unit that will look good when installed because of the factory bezel.

My Crutchfield catalog doesn't list a kit for any late model Volvo. The website indicates they have over a hundred units that will *fit* (they say it's a standard Euro-DIN form factor), but looking at a few of the offerings, I don't know how you could make them look nice without either having a custom bezel made, or finding some way to cut out the existing bezel.

If the only issue is having a CD changer, why not get the factory optional 10-disk changer that goes under the floor of the cargo compartment--the factory head unit already has controls for the changer built-in and the wiring harness is already installed...

thx for the thoughts - you are right as my trip to the dealer confirmed this - but that factory 10 disk changer costs $1000 per dealer! kind of pricey for a modest changer when standard models cost about $200

then I went to a speciality car audio store - the guy there said forget about CD changers, and just get XM radio (for about $800 out the door)

don't know much about XM but I think I will deal with the 1 CD changer for a file until market offers better solution

      otherwise, great car though

Is that $1000 installed? If so, find out what it costs just for the parts. It looks like a piece of cake to install (screw it down, plug in the cable).

Crutchfield lists a $300 6-disk changer for 2000 and older Volvos--you may want to check with them if this unit works with the new model, or if they have one that does.

P.S. The car audio guy was just trying to sell you an $800 bill of goods. XM radio is certainly better than listening to AM or FM, and it does allow you to choose the *type* of music you want to listen to, but if you are interested in listening to specific selections, forget it.

Although it's a desirable replacement for conventional radio reception, it isn't even remotely like having a CD changer that plays your own particular selection of music...

If you want a less costly package than OEM, it will probably be cheaper to removed the existing unit and replace it with a good aftermarket system. A site like Crutchfields should be able to give you ideas for options. Once you decide on which brand/model you want, you can then buy them cheapest via Ebay (new) and local stereo shops can probably install the system if you'ld rather not do it.
