Alternator repalcement 850

My 93 850 with 77000 is only putting out 26 amps when charging. With the Wisconsin weather, this is becoming less of a good thing. No warning lights yet, but a rebuilt bosch is on its way. Any tips for replacment would be appreciated. I assume the cooling fan removal, and losening the powersteering tank will be helpful.

    I recently had my alternator go bad at almost 140,000 miles on my '94 850. I checked prices everywhere for a replacement but ended up doing it cheaper, having it rebuilt by a local alternator shop who warranty their work. Still, all together it cost me about $200 (including the rebuilding and other labor to take it out and put it back in).

    Why are you assuming the alternator is bad??
    It only outputs what the car and battery needs.

    Did you have all your accessories on when you tested the amperage?

    Do you have battery drainage problems?

    Are the lights dimmer than they should be?

      Had the Mechanic who does my tranmission work and alignment work etc. for all of my vehicles (since 1983) test the charging system out using a Vat 45 tester. This showed the low output on the alternator. The vehicle is starting slower and slower each day.

      This seems to be a logical place to start.

        How old is your battery? I had a 1 1/2 year old Volvo battery croak last year and replaced it with an Autozone (Duralast?) battery of correct capacity. Haven't had a problem since.

          Battery is about 5 years old. Had it load tested and found it to be OK. It is taking a charge when I apply a battery charger to it. Had Autozone check entire electrical system as a double check to the first test and the results were the same. No Output from the alternator. I am begining to think that replacement is the way to go for the alternator.

    Lifting the coolant expansion tank out of it's bracket and setting it aside will give you plenty of room to get at your serpentine belt tensioner. Beyone that, I don't have my Haynes manual handy so I can't offer more help.
