Interior Heater Malfunction 850

My electronic heater lights flash pretty often in my wagon these days. Basically i am getting error codes B1 414 & 417. It is indicating that the climate control units (the ones above the driver and passenger side seats installed in the ceiling) are not functioning propperly. This error allows me to have only hot air if i turn the heat up to the max position (I am either smoking hot or cold, no other settings work). Are these items that are easily cleaned and fixed? Can they be removed without taking apart a lot of the carpeting in the ceiling? Any help here wouild be appreciated. I talked to the Dealer and they were going to replace them for about $300 each, ouch!!!!
Thanks

I recently bought a 95 855 glt with the same fault codes as you. The sensors are behind the two grab handles. The hanes manual very clearly describes how to remove them. My drivers side was clogged with dust, I used a q-tip to clean the sensor and fan. My passengers side was also dirty, but after cleaning the fan didn't spin at all. The passenger sensor was $73 from the dealer, and it took me <15 minutes to install, including clearing the ECC fault codes. My 855 seems to be the easiest car to work on I've ever owned. Best Wishes, Chuck.

I have the exact same problem although I cleared the fault codes and they do not come back but I still usually do not get heat unless the temp is set on full, I am thinking it is the control unit itself but not sure I want to take it in and see if the dealer will replace it to see if it fixes the problem.

I checked my inside sensors and they are clean and seen to be working fine and my fault codes do not come back. I find it hard to believe that both of your sensors have gone out.

Did you clear your fault codes and do they come back?
the sensors are pretty easy to replace yourself and you can get them cheaper from some place in Florida I believe.

Let me know if you find out anything or need help.

Jeff, All you need to do(if their just dirty or clogged up with crap)is to use a shop and suck the dirt out. There is a small fan in there that samples the cabin air so the ECC can do its thing, and they get fouled once in a while. You can also just blow them out with a air hose......but I like to vacume them out.
