Can anyone tell me where the 6 pack CD changer should be relocated now that i have installed the 3rd row seat? I have been told by volvo that it should stay in the trunk but will be mounted on its side. They sell the bracket and a carpet cover for it. The bracket is almost $400 bucks and the cover is about $60. If anyone has a picture of where this should be mounted or how the bracket looks i thought i would weld one up myself. I have also been told that it wil mount directly under the passenger side front seat but cannot confirm this. Any help would be appreciated.

My 850 Turbo Wagon has had an alpine 611 changer under the Passenger seat (I use the freight compartment for bulky loads). It needed diverting the under-front-pass seat airvent to avoid heat on the changer. As someone who travels long distances often, I find it convinient to be able to switch out the disk cartridges without taking my eyes off the road or left hand off the wheel.

Did you re-route the CD cable that is stock from the trunk of your car to the front pasenger seat or did you buy a new cable to connect to your CD player?
Your cd player is the 6 Disk version right?

Thought I would add my 2 cents. I put the CD changer in the glovebox. Fits extremely well and no bracket is required. Very stable and snug with no skips. Drilled an access hole in the left side to get the wiring to the radio. I know I lost my glovebox for storage but I have easy access to the CD magazines. Good luck!

Volvo's relocated spot for that with the 3rd seat is in the compartment to the left side, half sticks up above floor level. To do it with their parts, you'll need a new bracket with cover. The springs to each side of the unit also need to be switched from horizontal to vertical positions or cds will skip (small square covers cover that).
The bracket hardly looks like $400 worth as it's just a simple one piece bracket. Try calling another Volvo dealer parts department because I think someone's mistaken at that price. I'd never pay that price for that bracket.
If nothing else, I'd just go to a hardware store and find some stuff to make my own bracket long before paying $400 for one. The $60 for the cover doesn't sound bad however and it'll look finished with it, rather than just having it opened and visable.
A potential problem might be that (knowing kids), the temptation to put things inside the changer sitting next to them could become a serious problem for that changer.

I take it this bracket fastens into the floor wood/trim that is nearest to the left side window (small looking contoured wood peice) or does that peice get removed and the cd player mounts to the steel frame of the floor.

I've seen/installed 2 different types (depends on year), one mounts on top as you're suggesting (older cars like 850s) and another mounts to the metal between that small compartment and the larger one. On that type, most of it's below floor level but some is above it and that floor piece is replaced with another that's contoured. I know that's how '01 on up types are and that has to be a very costly install.
I just bought a Pioneer cd-changer for my old 745T and it's now just mounted to the left side piece and on top, works for me. One could also easily make a box for it if need be to keep it hidden or out of harms way.

I have had a fair amount of experience with this and in fact just bought a kit from Volvo today to change how mine is mounted.

I have a 1995 855 T5R that was equipped from Volvo with the changer and full size spare, which cause the same issues as having a third seat. No room for horizontal mount of the changer. The changer came mounted vertically on the surface of the left rear floor panel and had a molded cover that slipped over the bracket and changer for protection. This was a very half-assed fix that Volvo came up with obviously as an after thought. It was so ugly that the previous owner (my dad) removed the changer and just lived without it. The bracket for this setup is less than $15 from Volvo and i'm not sure about the cover, but it is probably the $40 cover that was spoken of in previous replies to this thread.

Apparently because of customer complaints, Volvo redesigned the vertical mount and came out with a kit that completely replaces the left rear floor panel and mounts the player halfway recessed into the well. It still sticks up, but has a hinged cover, is color coordinated to the car and even has a place for an extra magazine. This kit in Grey is Volvo part number 9164225 and has a list price of $198.00. I managed to get this from my dealer for $168.30 and he indicated that it was in stock in Volvo's Los Angeles warehouse. He told me he would tag it onto his 'critical' order and would have it for me tomorrow.

I would be happy to report on the final install and even forward a digital picture if there is anyone interested. I did see this pictured in a Volvo accessories brochure once as well. That's how I knew to ask about it. It appears to be the best solution, although not perfect, for all of us with 3rd seats or "R's" with full size spares.

As for mounting it under the front seat, this sounds like it would work OK, but it might get exposed to kicking from passengers and/or excessive heat from the ventilation system. This may be why Volvo never did that. I use my glove box too much to sacrifice it for that sort of mounting. And besides, for some reason I think it's a bit sacrilege for me to do any 'non-Volvo' mods to a yellow T5R wagon. I still think its gonna' be a collectors item someday.
