Explain this (seemingly) strange claim by an ebay seller of an 855R 850

From ebay:

"I used to sell these cars when they were new. They are quite rare and therefore were unaffordable to me until I came across this high mileage example. I have owned the car for eight months. It was my dream car, but a job change has forced me into the need for a truck (blah). These cars are good for the mileage - the R's only week spot is the transmission and that has already been addressed on this car (they are really only 242hp for five seconds at full throttle then the computer backs off the turbo because Volvo knew their transmission wouldn't hold up to the power for long bursts)."

I'd like to know if there is any validity to this? This is out of pure curiosity; I own a 744T.

Explain this (seemingly) strange claim by an ebay seller of an 855R 850

My 94 854 T has 123K miles and 265 hp, no problems with anything. Tranny gets synthetic fluid changes every 20K
The R wagon is at 300 hp, no problems, same tranny upkeep.
It all depends on how the car was treated.

    Validity of WHICH claim? 850

1.) That "the only week spot is the transmission"?

If he added "and the evaporator, main seal, switches, power seat, electronics, ABS module, stabilizer bar end links, etc. etc." it might be a correct statement.

2.) That "they are really only 242hp for five seconds at full throttle then the computer backs off the turbo because Volvo knew their transmission wouldn't hold up to the power for long bursts"?

I don't know the exact numbers, and I'm too lazy to look them up, but yes the R's ECU allows a momentary burst of additional power, and the reason it backs off was purportedly to save the automatic transmission. See archives. In reality those extra pones were grazing in a pasture somewhere most of the car magazines never found 'em, and yes aftermarket ECU programming does NOT do this, and the transmissions won't immediately explode. Although I seem to remember a recent post by someone with a modified 850T who did destroy a transmission. And thought it was well worth it.

      Validity of WHICH claim? 850

Good one. I don't have my 855t manual in front of my but I recall it mentioning the R version will allow about 240hp for 30sec before backing off to the 222hp the non-R model is rated for. I figured Volvo's thinking was that after 30 seconds, if you haven't beaten whatever it is you're trying to outrun, you're not going to. Thirty sec is a long time to have your foot planted on the floor on the street. (Not to start a street racer flame thread here.)

No idea about differences between T and R transmissions. Seems it would have surfaced here often if it were true though. FWIW, my car's previous owner had the tranny replaced under warranty at 56,000 miles. Did a rear seal at the same time as added insurance.

The recent post regarding a tranny failure in a modified turbo was reassuring though. Again, if I recall, about 280hp, lots of abuse and finally cooked the trans at somewhere close to 150,000 mile mark.

Looks like it was serviced well. Can this be validated? Looks pretty nice but I'd pass based on mileage. Just my 2cents.

Explain this (seemingly) strange claim by an ebay seller of an 855R 850

The guys 5 second statement is false and the turbo trans is "beefier" than the non-turbo trans. I've been a Volvo tech for years and we rarely replace trannies from turbo 850s so "not an issue". Abuse and neglecting to flush ATF will shorten the life of any trans in any car.

I don't think there's much truth to that considering companies such as ipd sell upgrades to put the cars at 275 hp. TME's web site (when it worked) said the auto tranny can handle up to around 310 hp I believe.

      Hey guys,
I personally know a friend of mine who owns a 96 R with over 310 HP and the thing drives like a dream!!! There's no truth to the Ebayer's statement.

Hey, I'll add my two cents here. i've got a '98 S70 T-5 with 325+ hp, and the tranny is doing great. I punch it all the time and it has never complained. The guys are right, I've done A/T Tran Fluid flushes on it every 20,000 miles or so and made sure it stays clean and red.
