Still confused over installation of CD changer 850 1996

I am still confused over the installation of an Alpine 630 CD changer in the trunk of my Volvo. The car is pre-wired and I have located that but "Flying Dutchman" indicated in his post that I needed an interface cable to connect to the wiring in the trunk and it costs about $18. I have checked with Circuit City and Sound Advice and an indpendent shop. They tell me that they can supply an adaptor that fits directly behind the radio and necessitates running a new lead from the radio to the trunk and they can sell me this adaptor for anything between $70 and $99.95. I just do not understand why I should have to buy this adaptor and run a cable front to back when there is already a cable there with a DC supply as well. It has been my understanding from the Brickboard site that Alpine supplied the CD changers to Volvo on am OEM basis and therefore the fitting should be simple.....Can any Brickboarder help me with this situation and explain where I go from here.

You Need the Interface cable... 850 1996

..plain & simple. The factory cable only works with the factory CD changer ($600) The interface cable will run you close to $100. I paid $75 for mine, whic is the short cable (Peripheral Products, #VOLIL) because I mounted the CD changer in the glove box.

Still confused over installation of CD changer 850 1996

libra: i am also researching to install an alpine 620 or 630 changer. anyways from what i understand the setup is the following:

    1. start from the back of the volvo head unit, for eg, the model SC81X radio (x being 0, 1, 3,5 or 6)

    2. connect the VOL/ALP adapter (if SC810, 811) or the VOL/IL adapter if newer models. see picture of adapter and read the detail info in crutchfield catalog in:

    http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-iHBqsWMFHfi/ProdView.asp? a=0&s=0&g=42300&id=whats_included&i=541VOLIL

(try to paste the above url link in one long line)

    3. the above adapter is connected to the 18 feet cable that goes to the trunk of your car

    4. finally the cd changer.

hope this clears up the confusion.

    yona
