Intake Air Pump ---> 1998 V70 T5 V70-XC70

I have a 1998 v70 T5 and love the car. I have a great local mechanic here in MA that works on the car and it has been great to me. Knock on wood...

Not to mention that it is as practical as a SUV but just a tad more fun to drive! ;-)

My question: I have a whining noise on front drivers side. It is getting louder and is now a good old metal to metal grinding sound. The mecahnic says it is a pump that pushes air into intake to help with emissions. Say the car will run fine once it dies and will still pass emissions. He claims it is a $500 job to replace.... Said problem is very common with this vintage Volvo.

Any comments? I am inclined to just let is die (hopefully soon, the noise is a bit embarrasing. It only runs for about 30 seconds. Runs when I first start up and I really can't say I have ever heard beyond that....)

I did see where there was another post suggested drilling hole in bottom of intake air pump. I am assuming that this is to solve this problem. Probably too late for me.

Anyone else with this problem?

Words of wisdom?

    My wifes V70 came down with the same symptoms. Actually 1 week ago it went in for a Thermostat and Temp Sensor. Then this week it went in for the the estimate that the Air Pump is gone. We are looking for a good Mechanic in the Newburyport Area that works on Volvos. The dealer is saying $825 to fix( We're not happy with them)? Who do you use or reccomned?

    I am mechanically incline an am starting to considering tackling some of these tasks myself.

    HEY NEWBURY GUY (OR GAL)Replace the pump and valve.Try these part numbers....pump,air 9179271-3 valve,check 9125623-0 and a gasket,1271764-1.These numbers should be correct,but always double check.You should replace these items or they will ultimately fail.

    It's worth the try to fix the problem and rescue the pump. Drilling a hole prevents condensate build up in the pump and damaging it (freeze up or just splashing on bearings) but will do nothing to fix your problem. It is the check valve that is not closing and must be replaced. The pump may well still be fixed but as the previous post wrote, you need to disassemble it, drain any water, grease the bearings and then drill a hole to prevent any future valve failure from damaging the pump.

    I had a squeal in my pump too last week. I siaddembled it and lubed the bearings. No water in it or obstructions. It works great now.

        Doug,

        After you removed pump from car was it easy to siaddemble? I may try to remove and grease to see if I can save it.

        I would be pleased if it was easy to open and fix. Most components are assembled in a way you cannot fix these days...

          After removing the pump, I had to grind off the rivet heads to get inside the pump. I couldn't get it all the way apart. Namely, I couldn't get the pump vane off to get some oil at the underlying bearing. I think I got the rear one lubed. It still has a slight howl at times. I can say for sure that there was NO water in mine at all. It seems the bearing just needs to be lubed. I may decide to take it apart again and see if I can soak the front end in oil or something to get it lubed. After you get it apart, you can use cable ties to hold it together again. Works great! Let me know how you make out.

    Hi.

    I believe I remember hearing that if the pump fails, it sets a code, sets the check-engine light, then reduces the performance of the car until corrected. I'm hoping someone else remembers the specifics and can advise.

      Well, not only will the check engine light in itself cause it to fail your states emisions test, often when an air pump siezes and is neglected for a while (being inop) soon afterwords the front O2 sensor sets a code as well.

      If the pump's just noisy but still works, I'd maybe hold off on replacing it but you might want to think about putting some cash aside for it in the future. You'll need both the pump and its check valve, about $425 in parts.

    He is partially correct. When it does die, it will have no effect on the engine or performance. However, the "check engine" light will come on. This is an immediate emission test failure. Also, removing the check engine light bulb is also a test failure, as the bulb check function is a required part of most tests.
