1994 855 Rear Hatch/Tailgate Hard to Open

Hello to All,

My 1994 850 Turbo wagon rear hatch is getting hard to open. It appears as though the pretensioner is getting weak, if one exists (there is no shock, like on other cars). Is there a way to correct this condition?

Thanks in advance,

Rick

There are shocks like other cars but they are hidden by the roof trim. They run horizontal, front to rear, 1 on each side.

Thanks Bob, how do I get to these? How is the roof trim removed?

        Rick,

You need to remove the center trim panel first (screw under the dome light cover). Then you remove the 2 rear side panels (D-pillar one). After that you will see the 2 shocks. Have someone to support the tailgate at fully open position. Then you can remove the shock very easy this way. I did the hard without someone holding the tailgate at the fully open position. The tailgate fell down right away after I removed 1 shock.
I asked my daughter to hold the tailgate for me when I removed the other shock and installed 2 new shocks.
