Thermostat or Temp Sensor or Both

I have a 98 S70 T-5 and have a little problem. Coming home from a 60 mile trip my check engine light went on (imagine that). I knew something was wrong because my temp gauge was reading at the 1/4 mark. I took the car into the shop and got a code of 123-coolant. The Volvo mechanic reset the light and said if it came back on that the temp sensor needed to be replaced. Well the check engine light came back on as my temp gauge never went past the 1/4 mark. I find it curious that the light went on because just last week I flushed my coolant system....

My questions: Is the thermostat the same as a temp sensor or are they two different parts? How easy are they to replace (is it a do it yourself job) and if its a thermostat what temp setting should I buy?

Comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

Thermostat or Temp Sensor or Both S70

The Thermostat is pretty easy. The hardest part (other than having the right size torx) was bleeding off enough coolant to not make a mess. Took maybe 30 minutes total. The thermostat comes with a new gasket so you just have to take the old parts out and plop in the new ones. That should solve your cool running problem, but not sure why your check engine light is coming on. I followed the directions Ray listed in his message and they are right on.

Hi, Have you noticed the recent post < http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=556354 > It looks like your answer. Maybe buy the part and get some tips at the dealer, seems like DIY, and looks as though the sensor is near the thermostat as both are changed at once while you're in it!

Thermostat and sensor are different parts.

Thermostats fail often at around 70K miles.

My thermostat in my 98 S70 T5M has failed at 57K miles
and I see the same low temp gage reading as you do. I plan
to order a new one from volvoparts.com (they are not expenisve)
    and follow the instructions at:

    http://volvospeed.com/Repair/thermect.htm

Apparently, the T40 Torx screw is the tricky part so I already
purchased the tools recommended at the above page. The job
looks quick so if a mechanic did it I would expect the labor
    would not be too expensive.

Have a look at http://volvospeed.com, it is a great resource.
