I have a 98 and have always had a lot of clutch chatter taking
up first gear. Can actually make it hard to drive. My throw-out
bearing also squeels when letting out 1st. Apparently, both
problems are somewhat common.
There is a Technical Service Bulletin on the clutch on 98s for
those that have problems shifting gears:
4410046 Campaign -- Decrease in clutch pedal efficiency.
Since it is a campaign the work is done for free if you make
the complaint even if out of warranty (here in the U.S.). I
have not done this since I don't think I have this problem
(wlthough the dealer offered to do it for free and even ordered
the parts). It is described in the TSB as as:
Some vehicles may experience a decrease in clutch efficiency,
which could result in difficulty when changing gears. To prevent this condition, a coupling on the clutch control cylinder will be secured.
There is also a TSB for an updated clutch spring that is supposed to
make engaging 1st easier. This looks like a do it yourself replacement
if you order the parts. Again, I have not tried it:
4410004 Clutch Pedal - Revised Auxiliary Spring
A mechanic with a subscription to alldata.com can get the details.
You can subscribe at alldatadiy.com for $25/year. Dealers should
be able to print the TSBs for you, too.
Finally, under the folder of strange: I find if I disconnect
my battery overnight (resetting the ECU) my clutch engages
easier. The engine also feels like it has more torque at low
RPMs. I think resetting the ECU does give more low-end torque
and that makes the clutch easier to engage. It lasts about
20 miles until the ECU re-programs. Yes, this is wierd. If you
try the experiemnt you will need to reset the clock and re-enter
the security code for the radio (so make sure you have it).
Wear eye protection when disconnecting/connecting a battery.
