overheating 850 1995

I have a 1995 850T w/ 70K....Yesterday I was driving and the check engine light came on...shortly after the coolant warning came on and within seconds there was a noise from under the hood, red on the temp gauge and steam from under the hood. I was half a block from home and drove it there. I parked it and went out this AM to find the coolant resevoir was empty...I filled it w/ 1 gallon of h20 and and attempted to drive it to the mechanic. I got about 4-5 miles before it started overheating, I checked the resevoir and it was still full but boiling. I let it cool and drove about 1 mile increments, let it cool and avoided red zone overheating for most of the trip. Other symptoms: Removed top radiator hose from thermostat, started engine briefly and no water came out thru the thermostat, also the bottom radiator hose was cold and the top was hot. Any ideas? Not sure if it is pump failure, thermostat, leak? Help!
Thanks.

Classic signs of a bad themostat. I changed mine in my S-70 in less than 1 hour. Aftermarket price was about $10 for the thermostat and new gasket.
