front wheel bearings? 850

ive just hit 100k and ive notice a pulsing sound with almost a very very slight grinding sound too coming from the left front end, especially when turning right. Anyone experience this also? I would just like to get an idea before i spend hours messing with it. I was thinking it could be a wheel bearing although there is no play in it when its on the jack.

Thanks, Mark

Is it getting louder over time and independent of braking? Mine got louder and more consistent over time. If your CV boot isn't ripped, I'd start with the bearings. I just had both replaced on my S70. My mechanic told me the volvo front bearings typically start going around 60-70k miles so you're probably due. He recommended replacing them both at the same time since it's likely that the other one will go shortly after the first one.

Wheel bearing is a good guess. I had the same symptoms and spent some time messing with the brakes (the sound was just like worn brake pads) before I fixed it by replacing the hub/bearing. I also did not detect any play in the wheel, I just replace the hub because (a) the symptoms fit and (b) I couldn't find anything else.

If you replace the hub/bearing yourself you need a female torx socket, I forget the size. Just pointing that out because you might not have one in the toolbox (I didn't). Also, I mail ordered a replacement hub and it did not come with the required new bolts although they were in the web site's picture of the hub.

Sounds like it COULD be torn axle boots, where the grease has then seeped out and dirt has gotten in. If this is the case then the fix is to get the front half axles replaced (cheaper with rebuilt axles).

GRINDING SOUNDS LIKE THE BRAKES MAY BE GETTING BAD. PULSING SOUND-ANTI LOCK BRAKE PROBLEM?

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU FIND.
