PNP? Trans? Both? 850 1995

Thanks Erwin! Just read your reply. Here's more of my sad story.

I've got a '95 850 Turbo. For several months, it's been sluggish when starting to drive in the morning. Now especially in the cold. It feels like it's stuck in low gear and won't go over 10 mph. Then after warming up (or putting it in then out of 3rd while driving) it takes off. It drives fine after it warms up.

So yesterday I tried the advice of moving the shifter back and forth 20 times. Now it won't start. At least it started before I did the 20 shifter moves. Now it won't start. AAAAAAH!

Today I tried to jump start it, start it in neutral. Some times it works when I take it just out of park. Today, nothing.

I was hoping it was the PNP and not the transmission.
My mechanic told me it was the trans and now after yesterday he says it's both.
PNP switch? Transmission? Both? Other?

How much should it cost? Should I try to repair anything myself?

I would said it is your PNP.... I just replace mine last 2 week... it not that
bad....... bitch to drill and remove the pnp connector over all very simple job

    it took me 7 hours...

but my car was lug and airow was flashing in the cold ... for over 1 years now

sometime it run some time it not...

after I replace the PNP following bay13 instruction...

no more luging no more flashing ... car run great ......

I will not think your transmision is bad...

    we have a 94 850 turbo 125,000 on it...

    Sounds familiar... 850 1995

    Landon,

My girlfriend's 1995 850 Turbo does the exact same thing. I am suspecting the park/neutral switch on the transmission. The microswitch in the console (which some refere to as the "pnp switch") is a whole different story in my experience. I suspect that the switch on the transmission is either out of adjustment or is faulty. Anyway, I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Sorry, other way 'round. The PNP switch is mounted on the tranny just about under the throttle body and the microswitch is in the console. Also check the mode switch. Some digging through the dealer's files uncovered that my PNP, Mode and the microswitch were replaced under warranty by the previous owner.

I just got back in and found your message. I agree with the other guys. Check/replace microswitch first (in the console) then move to PNP. I seriously doubt it's transmission but of course there's always a remote chance.

    Good luck,
BTW, as you can tell by me sig, we have the same car and my PNP and microswitch were replaced under warranty by the previous (original) owner.

    Not unusual.

As Ray already mentioned, tranny failures are rare. Start by replacing the PNP switch. The non-starting can/could be associated with a failing shiftlock button which when not working in tandum with the ignition, will not allow for the engine to start.

Probably the PNP since transmission failure is rare. What is
not as rare is replacing the tranny when the PNP is the problem.
I'd do the PNP first. Parts are about $90 and 2-3 hours labor.
I paid $350 for an independent to do it (they had already done many).
Instructions for the do it yourselfer are at:
