Fans runs after engine shutdown V70-XC70 1998

For the first time in 5 years, we're noticing the cooling fan (I guess) running for several minutes after shutting the engine and leaving the car. Is this normal?

Notes: 57,000 miles. The weather just turned very cold. Just had first service done by a non-dealer. New front brakepads and rotors, new front tires, and replaced the serpentine (accessory) belt. Plus changed transmission fluid, oil, plugs, air filter and cabin filter. (He claimed the filters he replaced were exceedingly dirty.) It also seems like the heat isn't blasting out the side vents like it used to, but that could be my imagination.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Wow, What a coincidence. My 1998 was just serviced at a non-dealer. My wife is complaining that the car fan runs when it is shut off. Also the heat is cold not like it used to be. In addition to this it is having hard starts to keep it running on the cold mornings. A different note is we have 75K on the motor. I am planning on bringing it in for a Thermostat. It appears that would make sense. As far as the hard start????

No, Amesbury, Massachusetts. Do you know when you go to non dealers to service your car. How do you keep up with recall stuff. One time when we were going to the dealer for the Volvo they automatically replaced a headlamp bulb because of a recall for no charge. No that I go to non-Volvo dealer repair I'm not sure?

I suspect you have a thermostat and/or engine coolant temp sensor problem. You say the heat is not "as blistering as it used to be". This is a symptom of a stuck open thermostat. Symptom of faulty temp sensor is cooling fan running for several minutes. With cooler ambient temps, the fan does not normally run very often or for very long. The ECM could interperet the cooler running engine as a faulty temp sensor and run the fan as a failsafe measure. Since replacment of the temp sensor requires removal of thermostat, I would be inclined to replace both at the same time. I can say from past experience that thermostats usually fail after 60,000 + miles. At minimum I would recomend a new thermostat and see how it goes.
