Miraculous ABS/Tracs Fix 850 1996

I purchased my '96 850 Turbo last summer, and had the cost of the ABS module knocked off of the price. The dealer did confirm this was the problem but I held off on fixing it. Every day the ABS/Tracs lights would come on 5 minutes or so after starting the car. 1 week ago this changed. For whatever reason the light has not come on, and I have had a chance to test both the ABS and Traction Control, and they appear to be working perfectly. I really do not know why. 3 weeks ago I spliced a green wire near the radiator fan that looks to have been cut by the fan. I did not notice any ABS change immediatly after this. I put a couple of extra psi in the tires about a week ago (they were a little low). Maybe the best explination is that the temperatures have been in the 0's, and 10's lately. I seem to remember that cracks in the solder were to blame for these failures. Well I am crossing my fingers that it will work until the snow melts.

Kris

I had to replace my control box about 2 years ago. It never gets gold in Georgia so when it went it went. I was told the new controller was improved and I haven't had any problems since.

i hope all you guys have reported this to the NTSB. the more of us file a report/complaint, the better chances we have that the govt might eventually convince volvo to FIX this obvious problem. it is after all a real safety issue.
    regards

Francisria- I have filed my complaint w/ the NTSB; Most of us won't realize how dangerous this problem is until you really need the ABS. I almost had a big accident caused the brakes locked up last friday. It was a combination of driver skill, upgraded suspension and very new brakes that saved my ass!

On other postings, I have seen guys talk about 96 850's having a faulty ABS/TRACS crimped wire underneath the battery box. There is supposed to be a Volvo TSB on this problem. Anybody out there have more info? Thanks in advance.

Kris- the good news is that your ABS/Tracs will work SOMETIMES/MOSTLY during the cold months; the bad news is you will still have to replace the module and probably sensors if you wish a 100% fix. I live in the tri-state area(NY-NJ-CT) and since the temps. have fallen, I have a 50/50% working/not-working Tracs/ABS. unit. It's usually 20/80%. Upon driving for the first time in sub-40 degrees, the unit would cycle for a few seconds(2-3 at most) and the lights go off(ie the unit is working). Sometimes after driving for 20-30mins, it comes back on. But in general, in the colder temps, the unit cycles ON(meaning in my garage, when I start the car the ABS/TRACS lights are ON, but aft. I get on the street for a few seconds, the lights go off). I sometimes press the TRACS button and the light go on & off on my command. CONCLUSION: The cold weather has some kind of effect on this unit; I'm going to replace my unit in the spring, since I had a real scary near miss last friday. Volvo really need to look into these units cause they seem to fail regardless of age/use/climate.......or well. Everytime I see that light come on I feel like i'm being screwed swedish style!!!!! I've only had mine come on on a really slippery day where the abs/tracs were constantly going and needed. Next start was back to normal...Mike

I just had my 1998 V70 ABS brake module replaced at 60,000 miles. Noticed I am not the only one here who's had the same problem. So for those who would like the NTSB complaint URL here ya go -- this is a safety issue Volvo needs to be forced to address.
