whining noise 2002 V70 V70-XC70

About a month ago I bought a new 2002 V70, with the base (normally aspirated) engine; it now has 800 miles. I've been hearing a high-pitched whining noise, I think from under the car--it does not seem to be coming from under the hood, and is more audible from outside the car than from inside. I've seen descritpions of similar noises on this site, but not quite this one--for one thing, others report a noise that goes away after 5-10 minutes, and mine does not. Any ideas what this could be? Does everyone hear this, and I'm just being picky?

whining noise 2002 V70 V70-XC70

Hi,
I´ve similiar sound from my new V70 2.4, that i bought last week used (5.000 KM). Since I bought the car with one year guarantee I will show it for the
dealer tomorrow. But I would be most interested in hearing if you find a solution on your problem.
Regards,
Henrik

Henrik,

I brought it in to the dealer who sold me the car, who's reputed to have a great service department, and they told me that the noise is a normal one issuing from the fuel pump. While I was there another customer dropping off his car for service said "It's normal. Volvos whine." In the meantime I've seen reports here about noisy fuel pumps (in the V70XC, which I assume has the same pump.) So I guess we should get used to having the radio on until we're at high enough speeds to drown out the whine with road noise.

Apart from this, though, I have to say I'm very happy with the car. Incredibly comfortable and smooth, and it has enough pep for me even without the turbo. Good luck with yours!
