Crazy shifting when in OD mode 850 1995

My 95 850 has started shifting crazily by itself. Up and down, whenever it feels like it. Not nearly as bad when in "3". Worst if in OD and use cruise control to accelerate. Relay? Solenoid? New tranny???

Crazy shifting when in OD mode

Two free things to try right off the bat are excercising the Mode and PNP switch. The Mode switch is the selector near the shifter for Econ/Sport/Winter. Rock it back and forth a few times. It should feel crisp and not just wallow back and forth.

The other is the PNP switch on the tranny. With the engine off run the shifter back and forth from P to L about twenty times. This wipes the contacts on the PNP switch. Do these one at a time. When driving the car, while stopped, rock the Mode switch back and forth about 10 times then drive. If the problem is still there, pull over stop the engine and try the other. I'd bet it clears up. Colder weather seems to bring out problems with worn PNP switches.

If you're a DIY type, the replacement procedure is at:

Good luck and DON'T flush your transmission! If the fluid hasn't been changed recently I'd recommend that it be done but DO NOT POWER FLUSH.

run the shifter back and forth 850 1995

      Erwin,

I was having the same trouble that Bob posted. I went out and tried the "shifter back and forth" idea on my car. Now it won't start. Please HELP!

Crazy shifting when in OD mode

OK...I shifted back and forth the 20 times before heading out this am, and only had one sticky downshift. No problems when on the interstate, but I did not try the cruise cntrl. I'll try that on the way home...if the roads are not too icy. Any idea why a sticky PNP causes crazy shifting? Why will new trns fluid help?

      thanks a million...Bob
