overheating 850

My car started to overheat on my way home.
I believe it is the thermastat stuck closed.
My guage was consistantly at the halfway until today.
The only way I made it home was by blasting the heat which was extremely hot.
I checked when I got home that the rad fan was going and it was. I checked the reserve tank and it was at its mark.

Is it common for the thermastat to just get stuck closed?
Or could it be something else?

Normally, thermostat get stuck open not closed.
You can also check your engine coolant temp (ECT)
sensor. Any codes?

waterpump?

How can a waterpump fail and cease to pump water? Wouldn't it basically have to seize-up for this to happen? The impellers in Volvo pumps are mighty!

I'm one of the few people who have actually had to replace a Volvo waterpump - and it was due to a leak.

hmm... didnt occur to me...
I figure there is movement in the coolant circulation just because the car heater was cooling the car but if there was lack of movement the heater may have helped....?
I'm hoping the cheaper solution of just a thermostat...

Yeah it just sounds like the thermostat, mine went this summer and caused the car to overheat. Just get it replaced and go from there, its the cheapest soultion.

PS Get a tune-up as well you've exposed your engine to a lot of heat!

Your scenario is exactly what happened to me a bit over a month ago - turned out to be the thermostat.

It ended up thankfully being the thermostat. I had to abort the simple job of doing it myself since the one torx bolt stripped when attempting to open it up. It looked like it was aluminum and due to the cold day I attempted became brittle. I didnt even apply hardly any pressure. Anyways took it to the indy shop and let them replace the bolt. All in all 1 hour labour and 1 thermostat.
Now I can keep my windows up so I dont cook trying to keep the engine from overheating.

Thanks for the help everyone!
