1998 V70R Enging Ticking V70-XC70 1998

Hi, all

I've recently purchased a second-hand 1998 V70R, with 53000KMs on the
odo. I test-drove the car before I bought it, and noticed a distinct
'ticking' type sound from the engine under throttle. It doesn't do it
when idling, and doesn't do it (at least, not that I can hear) on
light throttle.

The ticking is reasonably quick, doesn't seem to change frequency,
speed, etc. as the car accelerates, so really has me baffled. The car
runs fine, and I had it checked by the RACV prior to purchase. The
RACV found a couple of problems; coolant leak and oil around the
turbo-charger housing. Dealer rectified the problems (I hope!), and
upon re-inspection, the RACV gave it the all-clear.

I've taken out the extended two-year factory warranty so will be
taking it to a local dealer to try and get that noise sorted, but am
just wondering if anyone might have any idea what the heck it is.
Noise seems to eminate from the driver's side. As it doesn't do it
under idle, I can't find it when the car is parked and I have my head
under the bonnet.

Guys, legends, et al, any suggestions? Should I panic yet?

Thanks in advance
SL

I have a 98 R also.. and found a ticking one day under acceleration.. thought it to be detonation, so I put some 100 octane gas in it.. and still... underclose inspection of my turbocharger, I found that the EGR solenoid(I think) that bolts to the turbo housing and connects the intake to it, was cracked and exhaust pulses were escaping and making the ticking noise. Just like having a small leak in a header etc. I ripped it off and welded the holes shut on both ends so i would no longer have egr function,.. hell who cares about clean emmisions, right? lol look close and see if there is any exhaust residue near that part, it has a purple vacuum line going to it and a inch black hose back to the intake area. good luck.. my car is falling apart too.... kinda sucks.

My first response is to tell you to see if there is an alarm clock under the hood with wires attached...you might want to run in this case.
I do not hear this sound with mine, but would suggest you have your mech ride with you to identify the noise.

SL- I also have a 98 V70R AWD wagon and YES........I also posted about 3 months ago with a question "exactly" like yours. Still makes the noise to this day and no one seemed to have a response. Bought mine used with 55K, made the noise then....makes the same noise with 75K on it now! Again, mine has EXACTLY the same symptoms as yours! Maybe we can organize a "jitter bug" club for Volvos!

      Masher

Did you happen to ever take your R to a dealer in an attempt to get it sussed? I think I'll definitely be taking Wills' advice in having a Volvo mechanic come along to try and sus the noise. F_cking p1sses me off no end. I am VERY disappointed. Love the car, but the noise just makes it sound like a Volvo sh1tbox to all the friends and relos!

SL-your writing to the mechanic. The dealers all piss me off to no end and I'm sure they'll want to replace "something" for a $500 bill even if it doesn't fix it. I think your the 3rd guy I have heard with this ticking problem. Your right--makes what should be a nice cool car sound like a tin can! Piss's me off just thinking about it! Your correct too in that it does not change with RPM--Weird or what!
