1999 V70XC Hatch won't Latch V70-XC70 1999

Just bought a 1999 V70XC and the first morning I loaded the rear, the hatch wouldn't latch. Didn't matter if it was locked or unlocked, it wouldn't latch. Drove about 23 miles to work and the hatch began working fine. Next morning --same story, wouldn't latch--got to work and it now works fine. What's up with this?

I had that happen on my 2001 V70XC. The dealer had to replace mine, they thought it was happenning when the weather got cold. But then it happenned at their shop so they gave me a new latch. They thought that maybe threads from the rear mat carpet might have gotten stuck in the mechanism and caused the problem. Whatever the problem, they fixed it. Now I'm going in tomorrow because the side doors won't unlock. they're stuck in a lock position, no matter what the temperature. Sounds to me like volvo has a problem with their latches.

You need a new rear latch assembly, not an uncommon repair and most dealers stock them.

My hatch just did that last week when the temperatures hit -10 here. It was a real drag - had to tie some string from the hatch to the back seat till I could get home. As soon as I got home, it worked fine. Not the kind of hassle I expect at this price point !

Our '98 XC has similar issue....only occurs when cold. Problem goes away when it warms up, either in parking garage or after running for a while when it's not frightfully cold. A couple times I got the thing to latch by pushing in on the very bottom of the lid ( below the latch handle ).

Haven't taken to dealer yet...they say we 'might' need a new latch for about $150 + $50 labor, tax = $200 repair...An independant mechanic said to check for water in the hollow gasket around the back lid. This fellow is not a Volvo specific shop but is a long time professional in the field. For One,I am not convinced it's the latch's fault. We need someone who KNOWS! Good luck to us.
Please let me know the latest.

          1999 V70XC Hatch won't Latch V70-XC70 2000

We have a 2000XC and this is the 2nd year that we've experienced the problem with the latch not closing in very cold weather. After it sitting all night, we ran it until it heated up and then had no problem closing. We told our dealer about this at a maintenance appt a year ago and they could find nothing wrong but then they have a heated garage and it isn't that cold here in Missouri all the time.

We will check into the suggestion posted most recently regarding ice/water in the lid - whatever, not looking at your post at the moment.

Since this is the 2nd time for us, we just knew we weren't alone in having this problem. Glad there are places like this to confirm and/or investigate these things.
