can i change the low-beam bulb on my 2000 v40 myself? S40-V40 2000

hello all-

i've scoured the archives, and can't seem to find any information on how to change the passenger side low-beam bulb on my 2000 v40. i'm aware (from the archives, and from personal experience) how often they burn out, though my dealer takes an exceedingly long time for any appointment. thus, i've decided that i can do it myself, i just need a few pointers.

i've can see the bulb in question from within the engine compartment, but there's a fluid intake that blocks access. does the entire headlight assembly come out?

are there any manuals on line that describe how to do this?

thanks!

eepa

I wear latex gloves so if I accidentally touch the bulb, there is no oil deposited on the glass.

Once the cap is off, use bent-tip, long handle needlenose pliers - about $8 at autozone. The job's a cinch.

Thanks! My skinny fingers did the trick just fine ... was easier than it looked!

and if you do touch the glass part of the bulb....be sure to clean it off with a clean tissue and rubbing alcohol....then let it dry....then install it.

Thin hands and long fingers help. It's a bit fiddly, but not a complicated thing.

Simply pull off the rubber cap from the back of the headlight housing, pull the connector from the back of the bulb, release the clips that hold the bulb in place and remove the bulb.

    Installation is the opposite order..

The tricky part is releasing the clip, getting the bulb out and then installing the new bulb and securing the clip again. Take note of the bulb orientation as you take out th old one! It will only fit one way and there is a tab in the base of the bulb that fits in a slot in the headlight.

I can just get my hand between the headlight housing and the washer fluid filler. By using 2 fingers I can carefully lift the bulb out.

When installing a new bulb, make sure you never touch the glass of the bulb! This will kill off the bulb in no-time as the grease from your skin burns into the glass.

Try to avoid any contact between the bulb glass and any of the parts on the car.

    Bye, Arno.

How about the other side? The battery is right up against the rubber cap!

It's the same.. That's why it's a rubber cap.. You can squeeze/pull it to remove or reinstall it. Just take care it's seated properly all around when reinstalling.

Actually I find that side easier to change, but european S/V40's don't have the extra cover over the battery (it's 'bare'), so may have just a tad more room.

        Bye, Arno.
