Engine Noise 850 1996

When we start up the car, the engine makes a brief clanging noise. I checked the oil which was low. I added a 1 1/2 quarts. Once the car idles or is driven, there is no noise. The car drives smoothly. What might be causing this?

Engine Noise

Clanging? If it's more of a sharp "clack", it's probably lifter noise. Being low on oil, cold engine, etc are likely causes. Others include deteriorated O-rings in the oil pan's pump galleries and the wrong weight oil.
