replacing console/dash lights on 850 850 1996

Just bought a '96 850 GLT. I have a few lights out on the center console and on the dash. Can these switches be popped out and replaced or does it require pulling console panels and dash?

also the light to illuminate the difgital clock (small strip under speedo) is out. same question.

Thanksd,
John

    John,
The bulbs for the clock and any of the gauges that might be out will require removal of the top of the dash to access them. Its not too bad but there is potential for breaking something. Bay 13 has a good write-up.

The switches on the dash and console can be replaced as an assembly by carefully prying them out of the dash and unplugging them but I think you will find they are surprisingly expensive. The bulb can be replaced with Radio Shack bulbs but a little disassembly of the switch and soldering is necessary. I posted instructions in the last week or two to do just that. Worth a try if you are going to replace the switch anyway.

I recently changed out the 4 main lights and the clock light for good measure. It's a pretty straight-forward procedure. Check out Volvospeed Bay 13 for the instructions on Dash Removal.

I purchased the lights from Ebay and they "browned out" within a few days so I had to re-do the procedure. I ended up buying the main lights from the local Autozone; they didn't have the small clock lightbulb in stock so I left the Ebay one in place (so far, so good), that may be a dealer item.

Just be careful when you re-install the dash, I cracked the plastic trim next to the windshield when I was pushing the dash back into place.

Do you know the part numbers for the lights from autozone so I can pick some up before tear car apart?

      Thanks.

I don't have the part number for the bulbs; the clerk at the counter looked it up on their computer. Just give them your Make/Model/Yr and tell them it's for your dash instrument cluster. 2 types of bulbs will come up. The Autozone I went to only had the larger (main) bulbs (you'll need 4). They're 12V 3 watts; they look like a smaller version of the Malibu landscape lightbulbs. The clock bulb is a smaller bulb with a black rectangular base.
