Fuel Gauge Problem? 850 1996

I'm not sure quite how to troubleshoot this one. My wife was driving her 850 this morning (1996 85K miles) and the fuel light went on the gauge read near empty. Usually we get around 350-375 miles per tank (I like to reset the trip odometer everytime I refill just for info). The odometer was at about 250 miles. So she filled up the tank. It only filled about 11-12 gallons instead of the 15 or so that we usually put into it. When she got back into the car and started it up to go, the gauge only read that there were about 12 gallons in the car. So here's the question - is the gauge broken (did it read less than the car actually had) or is there some other fuel tank related problem?

What do you all think?

TIA

Rob

Fuel Gauge Problem?

I have a '96 850 and have removed the sending unit twice, cleaning it with carb cleaner to get back full range of reading. You might first try adding techron or another fuel cleaner to see if the guage reads a better range.

Fuel Gauge Problem? 850 1995

There coul;d be problem w/ the gauge - in this case you'd have to replace whole instrument cluster. However, more common problem is w/ the Fuel level Sending Unit, which is located inside the gas tank. The good thing is that you don't have to remove fuel tank to replace it because access to it is from the trank (right hand side, near the rear seat). The bad thing is it is ~$150.00 and I was charged ~$40.00 for labor. Main was displaying 12 gallons and was not moving at all so I ran out of gas.
