Check Engine Light--What NOw? S70 1998

I just got first check engine light since I have owned the car. Is the code stored somewhere where I can read it myself or does it have the fo to the dealership?

If you own a code reader, you can read it. Also, some auto parts stores like Autozone will download your codes for you.

But first things first: is your gas cap on tight?

You need on OBDII reader. Dealers have em. IPD will sell
you one for about $180 (I've seen same item for $135 at other
web sites). Rumor has it Pep Boys will read the codes for you
for free (and why not, then they can sell you some parts). I
wonder if a lot of auto supply stores will now do this, seems like
they would.

The OBDII port is under the center arm rest.
