PBR's in rear are NASTY NOISY!!!!!!!!!! Help (please)

(64Kmiles on 855) Installed rear PBR pads Wed. in like a champ because the 850 rear Ate's are exactly the same as 1975-199X 240's (who knew?). I've done a bunch on 240/260's. Mostly used PBR's with zero issues. I used some red CRC anti-squeal goo that I never used before (usually use Sil Glyde) No noise, no nothing.

Drove car all is well, Gave car back to wife.

Next day, Thurs. wife backs car up and brakes. WOW SUPER LOUD METAL ON METAL!!

This AM I tear into the rear again thinking it's the goo. What a nasty mess. I'll never use that crap again. I take it all apart clean everyting perfectly (took almost two hours- normally a 30 minute pad change). I put everything back - used Sil Glyde, and the SOB is STILL noisy.

This time I take the pads out, cut a groove and chamfer the edges. Better but still noisy.

Screw it I'm putting in OEM next week. Or am I missing something????

    IPD is cool!!

    I Called IPD this AM.

They said my observation about the PBR pads is very astute. They will send new pads free of charge, free shipping.

PBR did change change the composition of the Deluxe pads to eliminate all asbestos.

I am not the only one to gripe about noise apparently.

FIX: Use MetalMasters!! I said "no way" - IPD said they will be quiet. OK.

and they are quiet - no more (new style) PBR Deluxe.

PBR's in rear NEW THEORY: Got MetalMasters in Deluxe box!

I still can't get the stupid PBR pads to shut up!

So here a theory. Although they came in a "Deluxe" box, I think the box contained Metal Masters. I will confirm by removing AGAIN and reading the marking on rear of pads.

    Here's why:

    1) ALL else is good. Yet they squeal on cold and get much better when hot.
    2) The friction material contains a LARGE amount of iron and HUGE amounts of copper shavings. I never remember Deluxe's to have this much metal.
    3) When I surfaced, cut the single groove and chamfered them the dust was coal black and the pads are black with the exception of the copper shavings. Deluxe pads are not black, more brown/white with little metal.

Am I whacked? I got them at IPD for $19 plus I had an unused $5 e-coupon. The only problem is they are "modified" now, but if they weren't right in the first place......

PBR's in rear NEW THEORY: Got MetalMasters in Deluxe box! V70-XC70 1998

I'm running PBRs all the way round and I had a noise problem in the rear just like you. I didn't solve the problem until I got my hands on some teflon coated metal brake shims from my local import auto part store. Just popped them in between the pads and the caliper (used NO brake goo at all) and they have been quiet ever since. That's a good thing because before I used them, you could hear me coming from a block away. Annoying and embarassing. Find the brake shims and put them in. They will do the trick.

98 V70GLT, IPD front tower brace, euro side markers, rear wing, PBR pads front and rear, 17" Valbrem Type 951 rims, cross drilled/slotted Brembos, P215-45-17 Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 912 K&N, IPD anti-sways front and rear, red painted calipers. Mobil 1

Now I need the exhau$t and the ECU

PBR's in rear NEW: Got MetalMasters in and they work

Tried those teflon shims, they didn't work. PBR is using a new compound for the DeLuxe pads. IPD knows PBR is just wrong with that new friction material. I gave up on the Deluxe and put in MetalMasters (provided FREE by IPD!!!!)

What amazed me is how good the MetalMasters work! In all my Volvo years I avoided MetalMasters, just because of the name and hearsay. On 240's when I wanted performance I used Ferodo, which are dirty has heck, but they stopped great, not noisy and zero fade - alas they don't make them anymore.

So you are using PBR's, but which type? And when did you put them in?
