I am tinking of changing my stock ECU for a performance tunned version. However, i am trying to research the side effects of such a mod. I have a 850 turbo (95) w/ auto trans. If i were to do this i would also change the exhaust from the cat back to a 2.5" dia with a sport muffler.

My question to all volvo experienced persons is what horror storys do you have to tell, or is this in fact a reasonably safe mod. Any info that can be offered including tips, links or what ever would be greately appriciated.

Also if anyone who has done this mod can explain what to expect with regards to drivabilty and real performance icreases would also be an asset.

Any other tips on how to safely squeeze power from this automobile?

I've also been thinking about the ipd ECU and exhaust upgrade. I've done some online research and found that most people prefer the ipd upgrade. When I make the switch it will be for the ipd ECU. I haven't heard a bad word about them. The only concern I have is the Cdn. exchange rate. From your screen name it sounds like you may have the same concern. While attending the last Cdn. Volvo Meet near London, ON, I talked to a few guys about what I could do to improve on the power in my car(98 S70 T5) and most suggested the ipd ECU, exhaust and a high flow air filter. That should get me up to around 290-300 HP. We'll see what Spring/03 brings.

Have you considered Wetterauer? There is a facility in Edmonton, so none of the cross border issues (exchange, duty, shipping cost) to deal with. They quote about the same performance uplift as IPD. A different approach, though.

i went with ipd...no probs so far...pretty driveable...is least aggressive among chip/tuners...had it since 99...

Do you have an auto trans? the fatigue on the trans is my biggest concern.

Put the ipd upgrade, sports exhaust and K&N air filter in my '96 850R. They sell it as a package for a good discount. Lots of plusses. Only problem is the aching facial muscles from the constant grin.
