I flushed my brakes using ATE Superblue. It's better than DOT4 and 1/2 the dealer cost. Don't use DOT5 as it cannot be mixed with any other DOTs. Check this site for more info http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/brakes-bleed-bleeder.html
Happy bleeding.

DOT-5 is Silicon based and does not absorb moisture like DOT 3 and 4. DOT-5 also has a higher boiling point so it's considered the best in extreme conditions, or if you want something low maintenance. My airplane uses DOT-5, which means I only need to change it once every couple of years versus every year as you would with DOT3/4. I would also like to change my cars to DOT-5 but as I understand it, flushing the ABS pump would be difficult. DOT-3/4 and 5 really don't mix so the system must be clean before you can install DOT-5. Best way to flush it is with alcohol.

Any Harley Davidson dealer would carry DOT-5 in stock,$10 per bottle.

Do yourself a BIG favor and go to www.motiveproducts.com and buy their power bleeder and 1 or 2 liters of ATE Super Blue brake fluid (the fluid is available on their site) The fluid is bright blue (so you know when you have a complete bleed), costs about $10 US, and is DOT 4+. If you are looking to go cheap, then buy the Castrol or the Valvolene synthetic DOT 4 fluids; they will both perform just fine for the average driver. You do not have to use the Volvo fluid.

Using the Motive power bleeder is so easy that you'll want to change your fluid every year just for fun! Since you car is a bit older, I would carefully spray a little penetrative oil (PB Blaster, WD 40, Liquid Wrench, etc.) on each caliper bleeder valve to prevent them from snapping off from rust seizure.

Any dot 4 from any auto parts should be fine. Just make sure it's dot 4 and not dot 3 which is more common.
