surging idle, check engine light S70 1999

S70 AWD, 58K miles has surging idle speed. Check engine light is on. What to look for?

Ya, go to an Autozone if you have one in your area, and get the code pulled for free. There are plenty of online resources, including www.obdii.com that has the info on the codes. Otherwise we're shootin' in the dark.

I may have a similar problem. I have a 1999 S70 T5 auto with 55k mi. When I am sitting at idle in Park the engine oscillates between 900 and 600rpm. Many people have asked me if I have a diesel. As soon as I put the car in Drive the idle stablizes at 900rpm. No other problems and no check engine light. I'm thinking there might be a idle sensor or throttle sensor problem? Does anyone out there have any other ideas?

What to look for? In order:

    1) A vacuum leak.

    2) An OBDII checker.

    3) A good manual or online service that can tell you what the OBDII codes mean.

More information about numbers two and three are available in the Volvo section of my web page.
