Steering wheel making noise while turning........... S70

Ok here is one............

When turning the steering wheel on my 98 S70 to the right or left it is making a groaning/creaking noise in the interior.

The sound is coming from the point where the wheel meets the ignition column.

It sounds like it may need some grease or a shot of WD40?????

Any suggestions??????????????????????

Mine does this. Its a common problem. I used some white grease
on the sleave where it passes through the firewall. The sound is
the steering column resonating on the rubber seal. Side note: the
steering shaft parts here were all re-designed for the 70 series
so this is probably a year 98 only issue.

This may be the same problem that troubles me...

On my S70 -99 there is a clicking, ticking noise from somewhere around the steering column. Itīs intermittent, and itīs possible to hear it with or without the engine running. When standing still the sound could be heard by slightly turning the wheel from left to right or vice versa.

If i put my head down close to the pedals, below the steering wheel, I can hear the clicking/ticking sound loud and clear.

If I release the wheel I can make the sound appear by slowly raising and lowering the wheel.

When the car is running on the road, the sound will appear when increasing the throttle or when slowing down. There is no noise when running straight on a steady speed, but just a little difference in torque, more or less, would make the noise appear.

I had a ujoint in the steering column, just inside of the firewall, that caused a bad creaking on accelerating and decelerating, especially in cooler weather. This noise was present for many many months. The dealer finally gunked up the whole knuckle with gobs of smelly grease in an attempt to get rid of the noise, and two days later, it was gone forever!

Make sure you got enough power-steering fluid.
