Would like to paint my grille... C70 1999

I would like to paint my grille flat black on the
vertical bars only. It looks very easy to remove the
grille from the hood but does anyone know how to
remove the emblem part[with slanted trim] without
damaging it.

I see the emblem is attached by 5 or 6 plastic lugs
which are secured with star type rivets. Do these
rivets pop off easy? Can I reuse these rivets?

I have a '99 C70 as well and went with the mesh grille offered from IPD. I have gotten quite a few compliments on it (I also debadged the back trying to make my car a bit of an enigma to users... just need to find the carbon fibre hub caps shown on Volvospeed, can't seem to find them). Anyway, I am sure you have looked around a bit, but just thought I would drop you a line that I am very pleased with the IPD grille. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Bret M. Binder

PS There are photos of the grille on the used cars section of IPD's website.

Why not just get the XC grille?

Hiya Mike,

Great suggestion but I personally don't like the
eggcrate look of the XC90 grille. Also it looks like
you can see the radiator easily and it looks like
the squares are so large that projectiles can easily
pass grille and damage the radiator. Do my observations
have any merit?

I put an eggcrate grille (from a '99 XC) on my '99 C70 convertible this summer & I am happy with how it looks. I actually got off my lazy @ss and took a picture. Thus far, no foreign objects have flown through the openings (knock on wood!)

It's all up to you, of course.

Thanks for the pic Greg. It does look nice.

Can't see it well but can you
see the gray of the radiator more than the original
grille and do you feel the openings are a little large
for rocks, etc to damage radiator?

Also did it run you under 2 bills?

I don't really notice the color of the radiator showing through the grille.

Nor have I had any issues with the size of the openings.

The whole project for me was well under $200 & I am happy with the results.

A closer inspection of the XC grille... C70 1999

reveals that within each of the rectangular eggcrate openings is a set of smaller squares. See the picture below. I personally don't think anything but a very small object (or a very large, heavy object :-0 ) is flying through that grille.

Tracking down the XC grille... C70 1999

When I began my search for the XC grille, I looked around for a long time - they pop up on ebay now and then. A new grille from the dealer is going to be slightly more that $200. I got mine from www.volvosaabparts.com - it's this giant salvage yard place in California. You can look around on their site, but if you want to order something or check availability, you have to give them a call. I think it cost me $125 plus shipping. They were good guys to deal with. The grill itself was in great shape (the poor ol' XC from which it came got hit in the side). I cleaned it up a little with a old toothbrush & some 409.

Later on, I sold my original grille to someone else for roughly $50.

So, my out-of-pocket cost was below $100.

Greg

So far I haven't got anything stuck inside the grille and believe me, Socal traffic has all sorts of debris on the road. I actually have pictures posted of it... briefcase.yahoo.com/mike_c70. That should give you a better idea.

If your going to keep any of the chrome, you'll have to tape it off, so just tape the emblem off too!
