I have a 1995 850 with the stock SC-811 radio (AM/FM + cassette). I would like to replace it with the same Volvo radio made to fit the 850, but the model which also has the single CD player built-in (models SC-815 or SC-816 -- correct? Are there any other models with a CD slot that fit a 1995 850?). I understand that all 3 models (SC-811, SC-815 and SC-816) can operate an optional 6 CD changer (am I correct? I intend to hook the SC-815 or SC-816 to a changer as well). Is there any place I can get an SC-815 or SC-816? Volvo will sell a new one, but it costs over $900. A refurbished one from Volvo sells for about $200, but you must exchange a non-functioning one that is the same model number. Any thoughts?

Curious... a while back, I upgraded my SC-816 to the SC-901 by exchanging the 816 at the local service department, plus $166 on top of the core credit for the SC-816. The parts clerk originally said that I couldn't make this upward exchange, but the parts manager was nearby and overheard the conversation. He stepped in, looked it up in a parts book, and said that this wouldn't be a problem because Volvo gives him credit for the returned core regardless of whether he buys the same model as reconditioned stock.

A guy at Volvospeed.com had one for sale in the classified board.

Try one of the Volvo recyclers like erievovo.com, etc Someone mentioned doing this, price seemed good, and the recycler offered a limited warranty. Check the archives.
