Turns over but won't start , what to try before resorting to tow truck? 850 1997

I don't want to tow it to the dealer, yet. I don't know if it is related, but I have been having a brake light indicator go on intermittently. Right before it died, my daughter drove 10 blocks home. We then opened the trunk, pulled out the right rear brake light, saw it was OK and replaced the brake light assembly. After that it would turn over easily but the engine would hardly run. Turn it off, and now it will turn over but not run at all. Another thing that happened recently is my wife ran it down to empty, which we never do, so I was worried about junk in the bottom of the tank clogging the injectors.

Read the archives and perhaps it is flooded, so check the plugs for fuel. One tread said "lawnmower syndrome, hold down the gas and crank continually" Tried that for a bit but didn't want to do it until the battery died.

Just jad a 93 not start, no fault codes, read the lawnmower syndrome, that fit as car was on driveway and puleed onto car port, only 30 seconds of running. Hrld the pedal down, cranked a lot, but sure enough it started. I tell you, this brickboard is worth everything!!

Running the tank dry is very hard on fuel pumps....the gas acts as a coolant...anyhow - once shouldn't kill the main fuel pump, but maybe it's a fuse or the relay. (check the simple stuff)

10 slow blocks MAY have given you LMS, as suggested replace spark plugs with new, blow each cylinder out with compressed air (turn it over once with plugs out and repeat) AND sometimes even you may need to change oil if there is just too much unburned fuel.

Another branch of LMS is loose carbon under valve edges (at the seats) which prevents compression (once reason for the compressed air and turning it once)...when you get it started run some good combustion chamber cleaner through 2 or 3 times......then drive hot and hard.

I learned the hard way several years back - trial and error - yes it happened when the wife just moved the car from stone cold to the driveway...and it took me a few hours...

Sounds like lawnmower syndrome if the car was driven only 10 blocks. There is so much gas in the cylinders now that you don't have compression. You could try pulling the plugs, cleaning them, and then pouring a small amount of oil into each cylinder, which will help the rings create compression again. I have never had this problem before- this is just what I have read on these threads. Good luck.

Have you pulled out a plug? 850 1997

It could be the fuel pump, which will cause the car to turn and not start.

pull a spark plug, smell it. If it smells like gas, LMS, if it doesn't smell of gas, fuel pump or fuse or relay.

turn no start, troubleshoot, fuel? air? spark? flooded? timing?
