ABS/TRACS LIGHT S70

My 98 S70 just had the ABS/TRACS light come on. I understand this is a common problem. Where is the abs module located, and is there a way to pull codes to know for sure if it is the module that has failed? I just did the front brakes about 3 weeks ago is it possible i have a dirty sensor.
Tnanks for any info.
Bob

I have a problem where the ABS/Tracks light comes on once in a while- when I turn the ignition off for a few minutes and back on light is out- then few hundred miles later happens again- is this the problem you are having?

That is how the problem always starts. Soon, in 1 week to 1 year, the light will go on but not off. Complain to volvo NOW and get the module replaced if you are still under warranty. The problem is that the scan tool will probably not show a defective part until the light is on constantly. Contact Volvo and the NHTSB . Remember, your ABS is NOT working when the light is ON , so brake accordingly! StuartS

Thanks Stuart, unfortunately it's a 97 out of warranty, I will complain to volvo however.

Bob,
Listen to Davidm and others. Contact the nhtsb and volvo and let them know about this defective part. If enough of us complain about this defective safety part- remember when the light is on you do NOT have any anti- lock brake function. Many loyal multiple volvo owners like myself will NOT be buying a new volvo because they refuse to repair a defective safety related part. And safety is one of the main reasons we purchase a Volvo. This is a particularly acute problem on 96 850's and 98 70's. The module is beneath the ABS block, and in the 98, it develops cracks in the pcb wafer and/or the solder. The job is not too difficult for DIYers according to some of the recent posts. Part is $348 discounted over the internet, $416 at a Volvo dealership parts counter. The usual code pulled is rear ABS sensor...but it's the module.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE report this to the NHTSA for the purposes of data collection (perhaps they may eventually get Volvo to do something about this). You can do it in two minutes online at: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm

You need a scan tool to read codes in your '98 car and the most common control unit related codes are for the RR wheel sensor and/or pump motor (which neither of those is the real problem).
