code 3-1-4 intermittant no start 850

94 855 wagon 100k mi. intermittant no start, seems to start cold OK. code 3-1-4, which I guess is CMP sensor from other posts.

problem - I had an intermittant on the tranny speed sensor, and ended up running new wires from the sensor to the dash PCB. I'm afraid this is the same flavor.

Where does the CMP sensor connect to? It appears to have a lone black wire hanging out. No connector?

TIA
-doug

Yep, it's a CMP sensor code and it could definately be the cause of your problem. It's plug is mounted to a bracket below the CMP sensor, distributor area so follow the wires. Also check to wire harness where it bends around the trans dipstick area as if it's rubbed through and grounding out, it'll also give you the same code(s).

For someone who only claims to be Fred, you seem to know a lot.

I've now read out and reset about 5 years worth of error codes, and reset the check engine light. I even reset the service light. I love the Bay13 site.

The cable seems to be intact all the way from the coolant sensor at the thermostat (I cleaned the connector) across the front of the engine. The coolant temp. sensor, and outside temperature gauge are still flaky.

The car is starting every time in my coolish garage. Any tricks to getting the airbox out? I had the top half out yesterday, but the bottom seemed to be held in by one of those invisible bits that only appear after they're broken off.

Given that the CMP sensor is a Hall effect device, and I fixed the flaky tranny sensor by running new wires to the dash PCB, I suspect the sensor itself is OK.

      Opinions?

If it were my car, I'd just replace the CMP sensor to start with rather than try re-wiring as I've seen those sensors go bad. I've also seen bad trans speed sensors too on older 850s.
As for the lower air box, they just pull upwards from the outer side (closest to engine) as they're held in by two plastic clips on the bottom, then it pulls away from the fender side, nothing to it. There's a sensor on NA cars with two vacuum lines and one plug that needs to be unplugged and on the turbo cars, there's a sensor that needs to be unscrewed from the lower airbox (2 #25 torx screws, easier than trying to unplug the vacuum hoses in that case).
