    Common problem with 850 glovebox latches. As Ray already mentioned...the only solution is to cut the loop that the latch catches with a hack saw...taking care not to damage the surrounding area. The entire lock assembly is then replaced from Volvo....been there, done that....

      Tony,

      Is the replacement lock assembly improved over the old, failing design?

      This failure is one of the few failures I haven't had on my Volvo, so if there is something I can do that is proactive, I'd like to do it.

      If the replacement lock assembly is a newer, better design, I'd rather replace it now, before it fails, than have to fight with it later.

        If I recall, the replacement was not identical and could compare the two units and saw a design change which didn't amount to much but probably was a cure against future failure...BTW, the part is the entire latch assemply including the door handle minus the lock...the lock assembly is transfered from your old unit into the new one.

    or type in "850 glove box open" in the search field (down to the
    right, below posts) to see a whole bunch of similar problem. You
    will have to cut it open with a hack saw then get the repair kit
    (about $30, I think).

      Where do I get one of these repair kits? I actully fixed the broken piece already. All I really need is the piece I cut.

    (Oops, I hit the wrong key)
    No, it's not locked. I can pry it open enought to see that there's nothing inside the glove box causing any problems. It feels like its in the internal mech. I could get a hack saw blade in there to cut the catch, but I rather not. Also, I priced a replacement for Hirsch Ind., $90. Any ideas?
