Anyone ahd any luck with a cheap OBDII code reader? I was thinking of buying the laptop software and cable. Any recommendations for a 97 850? (I don't think the service light etc can be reset with this stuff, but that would be nice.

    I have a 94 850 and a laptop with the downloadable software you purchase. Its O.K. but if you have to spend the money for that I think you would be better off spending a little more and getting a Scanner with a readout. The interface is more user friendly. If you work with software for a living you could read a lot more than just the average joe like me.

    I just bought an OBll digital code reader through IPD, Innova Electronics Corp. for less that $200 and it has already retrieved a trouble code and I was able to erase the DTC from my vehicle's on-board computer and the check engine light went off as it should. I like it. After several hundred miles the code has not returned and the check engine light has not gone on so I'll just keep an eye the potential trouble spot.

    There are lots of places you can get them pretty cheap (relatively), but just a mental note: if you buy it from IPDUsa you get a booklet with some proprietary Volvo codes and such that come out of the thing.

    You're correct that you need a seperate tool for resetting the light. IPD sells that for a price too, but it might be more affordable to go to a dealer (1/2 hour of labour) or see if you can find a better solution.
