30k service cost S40-V40

My dealer, Royal Motors, in San Francisco quoted me "about $700" for the 30k service! This seems very high to me. What have people been paying for the 30k service?

According to my owner's manual the following are replaced at 30k miles: engine oil and filter, air cleaner filter, spark plugs, and cabin air filter. There are other things that are inspected. But how can all this cost $700?

I'm thinking I can do all of the above except for the spark plugs.

thanks
David

Dealer in Atlanta wants $550, another one is asking for $475. Looks like they make all their money from service.

I am thinking of going to another non Volvo service center. Do you think they will be able to do a good job?

    Any experiences/comments is appreciated.

As I was having some warranty work done up here in Canada, I asked my dealer what the 48,000 kilometre (30,000 miles) service will cost me down the road. He said about (and he showed me his book) C$550 (US$ 250). Now the configurations are likely different, but that may give some context. There were a lot of things to be done--looked like a major tune-up and all the tire/brake stuff.

So, if you live near the border.... but call first....

Blue Nautica 2001 V40... thinking of swapping for an '03 V70 for more room, although I quite like the V40

Is flushing the brake fluid part of the 30k service or did you just do it as preventive maintainance? I don't see that as part of the 30k service in my owner's manual.

It is recommended in the 850/70 series manuals but not listed
        as required.

The brake fluid absorbs moisture (by design, so it won't accumulate
into larger "pools" in the brake line) and after a while it should
be flushed. One reason is to prolong the life of anti lock brake
components which are expensive to replace (and can corrode if too
much moisture is in the fluid). Also, if too much moisture
builds up, the brake fluid boiling temperature can drop and if it
ever gets hot enough to boil you loose a lot of your braking (the
heat comes from the brakes as they are used -- not air temperature).
        Well, that the theory, anyway.

Smythe European in San Jose (about 50 miles south for those
not familier with the are) has their prices at: http://carcoupons.tv/smythevolvo/30k.html
They want $479. An independent could do even better, I would
    think.

Did the quote include brake work or other work not listed
in the manual? A tranny fluid chang and brake fluid flush
might be recommended by a dealer (even if not in the manual).

$700 is almost like saying take the car somewhere else
(and why would they do that since maintenance must be a
good revenue source since there are rarely surprises involved).

    Hi,
Here in NW Vermont, a 30K service is $325 or so. I did my own, had the dealer change the brake fluid. Not much to the 30K service.

How did you change your spark plugs? Any special tools or procedures required?

Just take the black plastic cover off the engine top.
Uses a few torx screws (the cars toolkit even includes a driver)
and this exposes the plugs. Just standard spark plug socket
and short extension is all that is needed. After 30K, they
will be in their pretty tight, though.
